When the Lies Become Convincing: How you can Overcome Doubt in your Faith
For any of you who are doubting your Faith….
When your Faith is under attack, go back to your roots. Go back to where you felt closest to God.
If it was journaling-then go back to writing.
If it was art-then go back to painting/drawing. If it was singing-go back to vocalizing.
If you’re not sure what your roots are; then ask Him to show you. Typically our roots are in the gifts He has given us.
If you never strayed from them, ask God to show you if He wants you to be doing something differently.
When our Faith is threatened, it’s much like losing sight of who we are. We need to bring ourselves back to our origin so our identity can be restored.
When whispers of doubt begin convincing you that it’s hopeless to pray, that’s when you pray HARDER!
We have all been there. We start second guessing the power of prayer. Is it really effective? Is God really hearing me? Does He even care? Is what I believe even true?
It’s easy to ask these questions- especially during the times God is silent, allowing multiple trials or when some of our prayers remain unanswered. Most likely it was one of those reasons that opened a doorway for Satan to sneak in. He feeds off our voids, doubts, and weaknesses. He attempts to fulfill the requests that God has not yet answered for us yet. They are lies, and the worst thing we could do when this happens is to put a halt on our prayers. That’s one of Satan’s schemes. Instead, PRAY!
Even if you struggle to find the words or can only offer God groans in your heart, bring it to Him! The beautiful truth on having a relationship with God is we can be real with Him. He already knows what we are feeling. He desires us to bring it ALL to Him. Your words don’t have to have a perfect flow. If your heart is silent, then go to God in silence. Just be sure to NOT STOP PRAYING! It is the most powerful weapon against attacks and the most effective way for God to restore our Faith in Him.
If we allow doubt to have the upper hand, it won’t take long for us to be blinded by it. We will soon forget all the blessings God has poured into our lives. They will be shadowed out while doubt spotlights itself into the forefront of our minds. Sometimes what we need is to spell them both in black and white, a side by side glance to remind us how richly blessed we truly are. I included some of mine below.
Write down your doubts AND your blessings. It’s one thing to think and feel them, but it’s another to actually see them written out. The heart is a powerful writer.
Bring them both to God. Read it back to Him. Ask Him for deliverance from your doubts and thank Him for your blessings. Read your blessings back repeatedly until it saturates your soul. God will meet you here.
A couple days ago I mentioned the main reasons why we sometimes find ourselves doubting our Faith. Some of our prayers remain unanswered, we continue to face various trials or God is being silent.
When we find ourselves in that place, a little self-reflection is vital. I know it’s not easy to dig into our own weaknesses and faults, but at times we need to. We should be asking God if there is something He is trying to change in us that we are standing in his way on.
Ask Him to give you the eyes to see what you need to change and the ears to hear how He is trying to tell us. Most importantly, the strength and courage to receive it.
We can never know for sure the reasons God allows and doesn’t allow certain circumstances to happen. But, what we should ALWAYS know is God is ALWAYS good! He can see the rest of our lives, while we cannot see past the present moment. We need to trust Him and move out of His way so He can work in us.
Instead of allowing your trials produce doubt within your Faith, choose to thank God for them.
I know it can be quite a juggling act of emotions during our trials-the up and down of moods and back and forth of remaining strong and being weak. So many questions I know. But, we have to never lose sight of the one to whom we belong to.
When our hearts are ripped wide open, Satan plans to take advantage of our vulnerability. He will nudge his way right into the holes in our hearts if we aren’t careful. There is no room for him to reside there. That’s where God dwells.
So, we need to choose to thank God for what He is doing and going to do through our trials. Let Him breathe His strength into our wounds, so we can really internalize the healing He provides us. His voice may not be heard through some of the turbulence in our lives, but He is ALWAYS there.
And like the teacher, God will at times be silent as we are tested. But, He never fails to grade our obedience and faithfulness by pouring blessing after blessing into our lives. And amidst being caught in this downpour of His Love, is where our doubts are washed away; and our thankfulness gleams in the rainbow of His promises.
Another powerful way to fight off attacks on our Faith is to READ THE BIBLE! Even if it’s one chapter a day, daily doses of God’s word has more potency than anything else we can ingest.
Before I read, I always thank God for his word and ask Him to open my heart so I can receive what He wants to tell me.
He loves to speak to His people through His word, so if you struggle with hearing Him above the noise in the world, take your Bible; find a place you can quiet your mind….and He will meet you there.
As you inhale those words, God has an amazing way of digesting His truth deep within our cores. The most powerful remedy for the sickness of evil and the lies it tells.
To end the week of ways we can overcome doubt in our Faith…
