How many people look at you like you have lost your mind when you tell them God spoke to you? How many people look at you with skepticism when you tell them God put something on your heart? How many assume you are making excuses when you say you need to pray on something before you make a decision? How many Christians doubt when they hear from Him? How many go astray when He doesn’t seem to be picking up the phone in our hearts?
The gap between many Christians and everyone else is puttied with the lack of understanding on who God is and the communication He has with his people. Even some Christians become stuck in the gap.
God draws close to us when we draw close to Him. The direct line of communication we keep with Him and He keeps with us is a deep personal language.
As we grow spiritually, we learn how God chooses to primarily communicate with us. We also learn His silence, which we need to understand is also a response.
We will journey through how we can hear from God and what to do when we do not. How do we respond to both?
HOW WE HEAR FROM GOD:
I cannot encourage you enough to pray. Prayer is the most powerful weapon a human being can have. It is mentioned over 400 times in the bible, so God is serious about his people praying. It is our direct line to Him. He will move through prayer in ways that will blow your mind.
1. Make sure your heart is right.
When we genuinely pray, and when I say genuinely, I mean truly open our hearts to God, the reception clears and we become receivers to hear from Him and He hears us. He answers His people. He is faithful to respond to us, even if it’s not the response we desire.
How can you hear Him?
You’ll feel it in your heart. You’ll hear it there. You may feel convicted or a wave of peace surge through you. You may hear from Him weeks later through a circumstance He changes. His response typically ALWAYS responds directly to your heart in places only He can know about.
2. Make sure what you are praying for are things of God and not the world.
If you’re not hearing from Him, then you may want to evaluate what you are praying for. God is not a Genie. If what you are requesting contradicts His word, expect silence. It has to coalign with His heart.
Some examples of what that looks like:
Praying for more money without asking for guidance first in making better financial decisions or for new opportunities to work for it.
Praying for Love without asking God to show us how we can Love him better first.
Praying for our trials to cease without thanking Him first for what He is teaching us through them.
Praying for a better life before asking Him to change us first.
When we make chasing God’s heart our primary focus in all our prayers, we will ALWAYS hear from Him. It may not be in your time frame or the way you want to hear from Him, but His replies will always be the ones best for our lives. It may take time to realize that, but you will.
Pray with a true heart and seek God’s will first….and you will hear from Him.
HOW WE HEAR FROM GOD
God LOVES to talk through His people. In many cases, we don’t even realize we are sending someone a direct message from Him. In other cases, we do. He puts this deep urgency on our hearts and if we try to ignore what He is nudging us to do or say, the feeling becomes deeper and louder until we HAVE to do it.
Afterwards, you feel this tingle of confirmation and you know the task was from God. This is one of my favorite ways to hear from Him.
Below are some images of people who God used to speak to me directly in different instances. Some of them may not even know it. I know this because they delivered something that spoke directly to what my heart needed in a perfect moment of time. God uses His people in several different ways. Here are a few big ones:
1. Our gifts
God has blessed us all with specific gifts intended for us to use to glorify Him. He will use our gifts to touch and speak directly to us. Whether our gifts are in music, art, writing, teaching, etc. He uses and speaks through them all. Music for example, connects with our souls in such ways that it pulls to the surface what lies beneath; hidden.
2. Our hearts
God will place a person directly on our hearts. We will find ourselves in constant thought over them. We will find difficulty to move past these thoughts until we fulfill them.
3. Crossing paths
God has perfect timing. He will cross our paths with certain people when we need them the most. We may not always realize it right away, but in time we always notice how much we were in need of them. I have personally heard many people talk about how perfect the timing was.
This is God. This isn’t some turn of the cosmos or work of the universe. It is the beautiful works of God Himself. He orchestrates every detail. Every breath. If you want to hear from Him, then you need to recognize when you do. Praise Him for speaking to you. The glory goes to Him… not to the universe and not to yourself.
God longs to communicate with us through others and desires our responses. Whether that’s just giving thanks or taking action on what He spoke to you.
If you’re still not certain on whether something came from God, then make sure it doesn’t contradict His word. He would never task you with something or speak to you in ways that doesn’t coalign with who He is. The best protection against deception, is knowing who God is and what He says in His word. For instance, God would never tell you to harm someone or yourself.
Pay attention to the people around you and how they affect you. You very well could be hearing from God and you definitely don’t want to miss what He has to say.
HOW WE HEAR FROM GOD
One of the way God speaks to me is through the sun. There are certain times the sun radiates in such ways that infuse my soul with an unspeakable peace. I can feel it in the very breath I take in those moments. I inhale the breath of God. I become mesmerized, unable to focus on anything else except the glorious beauty sliding down His beautiful rays. My heart beats in Love. All the other malicious and tainted beats from the world’s toxins are washed away. All I can feel is Love. That’s my experience in a nut shell.
God is in and through nature. He has splashed Himself throughout earth. He is felt through the wind, seen through the colors and heard through the hymns of creatures. All five of our senses are designed to feel God.
When you see a gorgeous sunset, why is it you feel awestruck?
When you’re on a boat in the middle of the water, why is it you feel at peace?
When you walk through gardens scented with aromas of varies plants and flowers, where does that sense of pleasantry come from?
These are God’s fingerprints. His breath. His presence. You are taking in the very breath of Him when your heart responds to the beauty of nature.
Pay close attention the next time nature speaks to your soul, because if you’re feeling the pleasant flow of beauty, you’re hearing from God. It may just be Him nudging you in His Love. It could be Him bringing you peace. He created so much beauty for us to enjoy, to indulge in His goodness. He Loves when we notice Him and give Him praise for His wondrous works and perfect Love.
HOW WE HEAR FROM GOD
This one is a little longer because it’s explanation is a bit more challenging.
Although it is true much of what we dream about is a bundle of irrelevant leftovers from our own minds, some are just the opposite.
God mentions a few times in His word about giving visions through Dreams. I encourage you to read Numbers 12:6 and Daniel 2:19 where He speaks to Daniel in a dream.
This is NOT to be confused with dream interpretations and should NEVER be associated with psychic practices. God speaks very clearly that NOBODY other than He is Lord, therefore stay away from any practices that disguise as such.
I have never personally heard from God in a dream. He just doesn’t or hasn’t spoken to me in this way. However, I have dear friends who recently endured a tragic loss and have. The dreams they are having indicate without any doubt they are hearing from God. Not one detail they described to me contradicts God, and almost all the details parallels perfectly with those who told stories of their near death experiences… as well as what God tells us in His word. Details such as:
They didn’t have to verbally speak to God. It’s as if they communicated telepathically. He spoke directly to their hearts and God ALWAYS knows what’s in our hearts, whether we verbalize it or not.
People in their dreams were rejoicing.
People had jobs they were doing.
Their loved one looked stunningly beautiful and happy.
God also tells us He is close to the broken-hearted, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that my friends are hearing from Him in such a vivid way. It truly joys me to the core. To hear how my God is drawing close to His people in their pain, awe strikes me. I’m not saying we need to go through something tragic to hear from God through our dreams, I’m simply providing a real life example of people who are. God very well can choose to communicate to you through your dreams for any reason.
The difference between an irrelevant dream and a God dream is the difference of scripture and the lasting affects it has on you afterward. Most memories of our dreams fade, but the ones that stay colorful to us, are the ones we ought to pay attention to. This doesn’t mean we should get out a dream dictionary to try and decode the dreams we are having to try and figure out what God is telling us. If we are hearing from God, I believe He will make clear His message to us. He would never leave us in a state of confusion. I just encourage you all to tread lightly on this. There is a fine line between hearing from God in our dreams and trying to play God. If it’s Him, you will know. You’ll experience feelings of comfort, peace and Joy.
With that being said, If you hear from Him, let praise be the first whispers off your lips when you wake. Acknowledge His fierce Love for you and thank Him for being such a beautiful comforter.
HOW WE HEAR FROM GOD
Through the heart….
I Love when God speaks to my heart.
Before I came to Faith, I wasn’t able to understand what those nudges were. What those repeated echoes of conviction were. I assumed it was my own conscience; just part of being human. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely times I still struggle with discerning between God’s voice and my own, so during those times I wait until I receive confirmation from Him.
God WILL speak to your heart. This is the most common way He communicates with us. It’s whether or not we choose to listen to Him or ourselves.
Once we come to Faith, the Holy Spirit then dwells in us. He does not dwell in unbelieving hearts. However, that does not mean God will not actively pursue you by speaking to your heart. He Loves you and wants a relationship with you.
For believers, their communication with God becomes clearer and louder as they grow in Faith. The reception is different from those who do not believe. The difference is who now resides in them. The Holy Spirit is God, so as soon as He dwells in us, we no longer see from the radar the world sees from. We are given new receivers. God begins to modify and adjust our reception. The static clears and our hearing is then magnified to hear heavenward.
Sound nuts? I’m sure it does. It sounds like some mythical sci-fi fantasy, I get it. What makes it even more surreal is it’s the absolute truth.
It’s vital we know that God communicates in Love. He will NEVER encourage hate and ask us to participate in evil. That’s the enemy and something we will discuss another time.
Here are some examples of how we know God is speaking to our hearts:
REPEATED FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS:
We serve a consistent God. When He directs us, He will continue to repeat Himself until we act on it. If we don’t, that prompting will never really subside. So, even if we ignore it, it’s always there. if you find yourself repeatedly thinking of reaching out to someone or getting something done, God may be calling your heart. If you have a dream you aspire to come to pass and it continues to surface, this also could be God speaking to you. Anything consistent is a sure way to indicate it’s from God, as long as it DOES NOT contradict His nature and character. These repeated thoughts and feelings will ALWAYS mirror the nature of God.
Oh the sweet tug of feeling convicted. When we are off track or sin, God will immediately signal our hearts. We will iinstantly know we are wrong, many times followed by feelings of shame and guilt. However, it’s important to keep in mind that God (The Holy Spirit) would NEVER induce those negative feelings in us. That’s our human reactions to sin. He convicts us boldly, but gently. He’s loud enough for us to hear, but gracious in His correcting us.
Have you ever walked by someone and felt an overwhelming feeling of compassion? Or you meet someone that instantly pulls at your heart strings? When this happens, tune in closely to your receiver. Listen to what God may be telling you. It could be He wants you to offer some words of encouragement to them or He may be asking you to keep that person in prayer. You may never know what the reasons are, just that you need to do these things.
Our abilities to hear God becomes clearer the more our relationship grows with Him. We can turn the dial in our hearts more easily the more we recognize His voice. He will always guide us down a path that directly walks His heart.
HOW WE HEAR FROM GOD
Through His word…
I can’t count how many times I was going through a struggle and I felt a deep pull towards my bible. I would flip open the pages to God’s word…and the scripture I would read spoke directly about my struggle.
God’s word is unchanging. Flawless. Perfect. It is God-breathed which means every word is reputable for teaching. Regardless of the many counter arguments you may hear from people that the bible is unreliable, those statements are absolutely false. Just like how the Holy Spirit works through us, the same was true for those God anointed to write His words.
God’s word is a living breathing absolute solid foundation to which we can rely our lives on. It is the only book in history that has an active pulse and direct impact on our souls. No other book holds this kind of power. God has preserved every single syllable, so that we may always have access to Him.
There are reasons so many people read their bibles in tramautic times, even desperate times. There are reasons people read it as they fall sick. There are reasons people echo scripture when they face danger. God speaks to us through His word. He comforts, reassures, instructs and corrects us through it.
If you want to hear from God, read His book. It is an absolute guaranteed way you will hear from Him. Allow your minds to empty, so that He may fill you with His Glory. You’ll hear Him. You’ll feel the walls begin to crumble around your heart, a sort of soul-piercing sensation. As the walls come down, truth arises and you may even begin to cry. Not so much a painful cry, but a humbling one.
When you are in the presence of God, it exposes your heart to His holiness and goodness. You can feel Him in your bones. Take a deep breath in and let yourself Hear from Him. Read His book.
God desires to talk to us. He continues to reach communication through what He has created within us and all around us. We get to choose whether or not we hear Him. We get to decide whether we want to disregard Him if His answer doesn’t comply with our own desires. We have the free will to choose between hearing God or the world. His methods of communication are unchanging and available for each and every one of us.
